The Survey Methodology and Quantitative Analysis Laboratory (SQL) aims to bring to Peking University two of the University of Michigan’s (UM’s) unique and unparalleled strengths in social science research – survey methodology and quantitative methodology. It is partially funded by UM’s Population Studies Center (PSC) through a grant from the Fogarty International Center of the National Institute of Health. It is also co-sponsored by the Survey Methodology Program (SMP) and Quantitative Methodology Program (QMP) of the Survey Research Center at UM’s Institute for Social Research (ISR). It is housed at the University of Michigan-Peking University Joint Institute. It also receives cooperation from Peking University’s Department of Sociology, Institute of Population Research, and Social Science Survey Center.

The SQL trains graduate and undergraduate students, as well as junior scholars, in survey, statistical, and demographic methods in China. The primary mechanism for carrying out this mission is to offer a series of graduate-level courses, taught in English, on advanced topics in survey methodology and quantitative methodology. A selection of such courses is offered every summer so that participants can complete the requirements for a Certificate in Survey Methodology and Quantitative Analysis from ISR within three years. Participants in the courses are roughly equally divided between (1) graduate students, undergraduate students, and junior faculty members at Peking University and (2) graduate students and junior faculty members from other universities in China. The ultimate goal of these efforts is to raise the level of social science data collection and analysis in China.

Professor Yu Xie from the University of Michigan directs the UM portion of the program. He designs the curriculum and recruits instructional faculty from the United States. He is also in charge of the China portion of the Fogarty grant to PSC. Professor Guo Zhigang at Peking University (PKU) directs the PKU portion of the program, responsible for student recruitment, local faculty recruitment, and project management of the China portion of the Fogarty grant.
