2009 UM-PKU Joint Institute Summer Program
The University of Michigan--Peking University Joint Institute (simplified as “Joint Institute” or “JI”), is established by the University of Michigan (UM) and Peking University (PKU) as an interdisciplinary research institute dedicated to developing teaching and academic programs in China through cross-border, interdisciplinary and cross-cultural cooperation, with an aim to share educational resources and promote educational reform worldwide. In 2006, 2007 and 2008, the Joint Institute successfully completed 12 summer courses, taught by distinguished UM professors or other US scholars, and had received high praise from students and scholars. In 2009, Joint Institute will continue to provide opportunities with 3 of its postgraduate courses for students and scholars, who have an interest in receiving overseas higher education in domestic China,.
As worldly-renowned higher institutions, both UM and PKU are dedicated to the production and dissemination of knowledge in a global context. The purpose of the Institute is to provide an international platform that facilitates global research cooperation and academic recourses sharing, through offering joint training and researching courses for all UM and PKU graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, faculties, upper divisions of undergraduate students, or people from other institutions or agencies who are interested. JI’s courses are open to both American and Chinese students and faculties. By joining these courses, students will be able get access to the latest outcomes and trends of the relevant research field, and will, by learning, thinking and working in a cross-border, interdisciplinary and cross-cultural way, develop a global respective and strengthen their own abilities.
The one-month intensive summer course program in 2009, including 3 courses covering diversified forms such as lectures and seminars, will be jointly taught by distinguished professors from UM or scholars from other US higher institutions and PKU professors and scholars. Since all courses and materials will be given in English only, high proficiency in English is a priority.

I. Who Could Apply
The courses are intended for Postdoctoral, PhD, postgraduate, upper division of undergraduate students, faculties and scholars from higher institutions in China or USA, etc. Researchers from other research institutions, government agencies may also apply.
II. Application Procedure
1. Deadline for application: March 31, 2009.
2. Points to be followed while applying:
* Please submit your application form via email.
* Submission with complete, detailed and accurate information and documents will help ensure the smooth processing of your application. Make sure that you have included all the information and paper documents when applying. You’ll need to submit:
- Application Form (to be downloaded online: http://www.umich.cn)
- (For full-time students only) University Academic Records Transcripts (original scripts with official seal)
- Two passport photos (with your full name and the name of the courses you’re applying for written on the back of each photo)
3. The admission committee will review submitted applications, decide and inform those suitable to attend the courses via email at the end of April 2009
4. Those who receive the admission letter need to pay for their tuition fees within May 1 to May 15, 2009. And, please scan your “Fees Receipt” as jpg form and send it via email to wangaining@michigan.ccast.ac.cn or via fax to: +86-10-6276 7623
5. Formal admission letters will NOT be sent until we receive your fees receipt.
III. How to apply for “ShiXueJunCai Fellowship”
1.Students who are now pursuing bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or
PhD. are welcome to apply.
2.Post-doctoral researchers, on-job post-graduates and people without
a Chinese nationality will not be considered for the scholarship;
3.Candidates applying for the scholarship please submit, along with
the other required materials, a valid income proof of yours, testified
by your departments, or your parents’ income proof by their working
units.
4.A true and reliable income proof will be highly considered in the
assessment of scholarship.
IV. Tuition Fees
1. Tuition Fees: 4,250 RMB for each course. Students may apply for the “ShiXueJunCai Scholarship” (Scholarship for Talents of History) to balance the fees.Candidates who are
awarded the fellowship may get up to RMB 3,250 financial support for
each person, and would at lowest be paying RMB 1,000 only for each
course.

V. Assignments and Examination
Scores or grades for student performance in the courses will be generally assessed by instructors on Class Discussions, Assignments and Final examinations.
VI. Courses Time Span and Place
Time span: June 30, 2009 – July 25, 2009
Place where courses will be given: Peking University (To be announced)
VII. Certificates and Transcripts
After completing the assignments and passing course final examination, students will be awarded a formal certificate and transcript in paper from PKU. PKU students can also obtain corresponding PKU credits.
VIII. Accommodation
All the living expenses including accommodation, meal fees, etc. are excluded in the tuition fees, and must be paid by students themselves.
IX. Course Materials
Course materials could be obtained from the UM-PKU Joint Institute.
