2009 Exchange Program

A total of 49 students, 10-13 from around the US, 12-15 from UM, 12 from PKU, and 12 from Tsinghua University (THU), will work closely with the members of their host laboratories, and will have opportunities to interact with students and others in their host country. This is an excellent opportunity for American and Chinese students to experience living and working in another country. Participants will have the chance to form personal and professional relationships that will enrich their perspectives on chemistry and on the world. Original research projects that cover the breadth of scientific interests are available in both countries.

The University Of Michigan And Peking University Joint Institute (UM-PKU JI) contributes to the communication and organization of programs between Ann Arbor and Beijing. The Joint Institute is contracted with UM and PKU to provide a number of attractive features, covering the arranging of accommodations and transportation, coordinating, the arranging of cultural activities, and the BOOT CAMP orientations of students, etc.
The Joint institute is working to offer a terrific on-site orientation program for the US students during the first 2 weeks of the stay in Beijing. The orientation program, which we fondly call the "boot-camp," begins in Ann Arbor, and includes: morning sessions of intensive language instruction, noontime lunches with PKU/THU faculty and students, afternoon sessions on history, culture, and living/getting around in Beijing, and an evening meal with different faculty, staff, and student guests at a local restaurant in order to get a guided experience with local cuisine prior to the start of the research phase. A series of orientation and cultural events for the US students while they are in the Beijing, in addition to the active and supportive group of Chinese and US students and scholars who are on campus.
